As a relatively new subscriber to your report I wonder how you identify each month as there seems to be such a varied appearance for each species as I am used to identifying by looks
Well usually it’s not a big problem - although some individual species are quite variable all the different forms are clearly identifiable. There are some exceptions though, sometimes two variable species overlap, or some forms of a variable species can easily be mistaken for a different species which might not show much variability. After a while you get to know where the problem areas are!
Last night (Monday 15th December) by 6.45pm there were ten male Winter moths on our patio doors, and three more on other windows.
Wow I’ve never seen as many as that - 8 is my maximum for a whole year!
We get plenty (in East Devon) but last night it felt like quite a show.
